Overview
L-Glutathione (gamma-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinylglycine) is a tripeptide found in nearly every cell. Its glutamate is linked through the gamma-carboxyl group rather than the usual peptide bond, and the free thiol on its cysteine residue gives it its reducing activity.
Research context
Glutathione is the main low-molecular-weight thiol in cells and a core subject in research on redox balance and oxidative stress. It is the substrate for glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases, which makes it central to studies of reactive oxygen species, detoxification pathways and the GSH to GSSG ratio as a marker of cellular redox state in cell and animal models.
